We caught up with Haz about how the Trek Momentum progression camp came to life and if there’s future plans. Read more below!
The first camp of its kind in Australia. 4 days, 10 upcoming female riders, full progression and full stoke! Trek Australia and athlete Harriet Burbidge- Smith host a freeride MTB camp offering up a safe and inspiring environment for any rider to set goals and progress their skills.
Can you tell me how momentum came about?
I have always done work in sport around progression and I definitely saw a massive lack of support in Australia, especially around Freeride and Slopestyle, and I knew there was little to no opportunities for young girls in the sport to progress or even try that style of MTB. In Australia, it feels like for so long it’s only been one scene, and that’s racing.
How long did it take to plan?
I chatted to Trek about 6 months ago about the idea of a womens progression event, and slowly we started putting together this event! I think it was made most difficult by me being away for that entire time! Haha. I was only back in Australia for a week competing before the camp.
Are there future plans to do more?
Definitely! I have a lot of ideas, one being a proper Freeride big bike line, something we just didn’t have the time for this year! But I’d love to create a Momentum jump line and have it open to the public after the event.
What was the most memorable moment from the camp?
I think seeing the girls hitting the airbag for the first time! Watching them get so confident and taking those tricks to the dirt course so quickly!
